On Thursday 19th November Channel 4's More4 News team marked the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child by visiting one of the very few schools in the country recognised as a UNICEF Rights Respecting school.  A number of staff and students contributed to the programme, and despite some rather bizarre editing and captioning (Callum Wright is now apparently the Head Teacher!) Portchester Community School was shown in an excellent light.  Congratulations to everyone involved and particularly to Portchester Community School with achieving their Level II Award in March 2010.

The Credit Crunch!

Adding up campaign banner

I think that we all agree that parents shouldn't have to endure sleepless nights worrying about how they will meet the costs of kitting out their children for school.  Children shouldn't have to face bullying or exclusion because their parents can't afford the right uniform or pay for expensive residential trips.  Adding Up is the Citizens Advice Campaign on educational costs and this is a real chance for schools to make a real difference to the lives of those families facing social and financial exclusion in the community.

They have produced a useful list of resources, including a top ten tips sheet that schools can adopt to help parents.  For instance, some of these are very simple measures schools can implement: such as offering sew or iron on badges that can be applied to plain clothing.  Please pay a visit to the Adding Up Campaign Website for more information and let's try and make a real difference to our local families facing the credit crunch.

Relate - Our Local Counselling Service

Local Information

The Portchester People community web site is now online!

Please click the picture above to go straight to: www.portchesterpeople.org.uk

This is your community web site, so please give us feedback.

As many of you who have been working alongside us are aware, Karen and Susie were busy collecting lots of information about extended service activities that are happening across our area (and beyond) for children, young people and their families last year.

Although we have yet to go to print with the Family Directory (pending for Summer 2009) and it is still in a very rough draft (i.e. an Excel Spreadsheet), Susie felt that it would be very useful for schools to have online access to the information we have collected to date,  however please note the disclaimer by Fareham East Extended Services at the bottom of this page.
