As you may already know, the Government has decided to cancel all the FYT Pathfinder programmes across England as part of its current public spending review; the FYT-PUSH offices therefore will be closing at the end of September. However, there is much good work to be delivered between now and then as we have been allowed to honour the many written and legally binding commitments that we already had in place. This means that some 130 projects will be delivered over the next 6 months benefiting large numbers of children, families and young people.

Advice for Community Groups on Reclaiming Empty Properties
Self Help Housing has launched a new website that provides people with the tools to take on and make use of, the increasing number of empty properties in our cities, towns and villages. The site has lots of information on how to get organised, how to get hold of and borrow empty properties from their owners, where to go for funding, how to organise any necessary repairs, how to use volunteers, how to turn renovating properties into a training opportunity, plus a bank of specimen and template documents.
The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) is an early assessment of a child that is used across all professionals and agencies. All staff who provide and/or assess services to children/young people and their families, and have already been identified by the school/ agency as required to conduct the assessment will need to attend this one day training course. Keep an eye on this page for forthcoming CAF Completer courses.
Two leaflets are available to professionals to explain the CAF process; one for parents and carers and one for children and young people. Please feel free to download your copies below:

The following are some fabulous new web sites for signposting to parents via school web sites and newsletters:
Parent Channel TV
Parentchannel TV is a free website for parents of 5-19 year olds that offers expert advice on parenting through helpful short videos.

Website for parents of teenagers: www.gotateenager.org.uk
The Portchester consultation found that many parents lost an important school gate network of help and support when their children moved on to secondary school. With this in mind, please take a chance to visit the new website for parents of teenagers funded by the DCSF, under the Parent Know-How Scheme. A quick link to this website would be an ideal way for developing your extended services signposting service through your secondary school website - perhaps you could even consider adding a 'parents corner' on your school e-newsletters...?
See more details about the Parent Know-How Scheme in the July 2008 publication: Parent Know-How Directory
This is a free of charge and confidential “text” service that parents can use to receive useful tips and information via their mobile phones by texting 84400 with one of these key words; Anger, Alcohol, Bullying, Divorce, Drugs, Sex, Smoking
Please download your advertising cards here for signposting to parents: B4UFLIPTXT
Launch of ChildLine online counselling service
ChildLine is the UK's free, confidential helpline for children and young people. Trained volunteers are on hand to provide advice and support, by phone and online, 24 hours a day. Whenever and wherever children need us, we'll be there. This autumn 2009 sees the national launch of this new online counselling service. When a child has a worry they desperately need to talk about, there should be no obstacles to prevent them getting the help they need. A fear of struggling for words, or of crying, should not stop them from speaking out.
Aiming High for Disabled Children

The Government programme to develop better short break opportunities and access to extended services for disabled children, young people, their parents and carers is supported by additional grant funds from 2009/10. Please find attached the briefing notes dated January 2009.
Aiming High - Briefing Notes January 2009

Hampshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) is committed to ensuring that people across the county know more about their local NHS services. To help achieve this, a new bulletin has been produced especially for people living in south east Hampshire. The bulletin has been developed in partnership with Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and Portsmouth City Teaching PCT.
The PCT is keen for the bulletin to reach as many people as possible in the Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Waterlooville, Petersfield and Emsworth areas. Please feel free to download this bulletin for distribution throughout your organisation below:

During June and July 2008, the Citizen's Advice documented true accounts of families trying to make ends meet. These stories have been produced in a report: "This is Child Poverty" I would urge all of our stakeholders to read this important document available for download below:
Please also take the opportunity to visit the Citizen's Advice web site to view their Adding Up Campaign to reduce the hidden costs of education at: http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/campaigns/current_campaigns/addingupcampaign.htm
Another very useful discussion paper regarding aspiration and attainment (December 2008) amongst young people is available (in pdf format) for stakeholders to download below. Article 4 gives an overview of how extended services (and other Government initiatives) attempts to raise young people's aspirations and close the achievement gap
Aspiration and attainment amongst young people in deprived neighbourhoods
The report below provides information on the Children and Young Person's Plan (CYP) for Fareham and the progress made against the agreed priorities. This information has been provided by the Council and our CYP Partner organisations.

Scotland seem to be ahead of the game (and no jokes about their football team please!) The Scottish Government commissioned the Playfield Institute (NHS Scotland), Barnado's and the University of Dundee to develop a website that provides practical information and techniques on how to respond helpfully to children and young people's troubling behaviour, build up their self esteem and promote positive mental well-being. It is such a fabulous resource for all practitioners working with children and young people, that I thought it was worth a popping a link to the website here.
Lockdown is a magazine written by, and aimed at, young offenders. Back copies can be downloaded at: JYB, and this informative site contains lots of useful information about the youth justice system and includes details about Youth Inclusion Projects, Safer School Partnerships, Mentoring and Parenting programmes.

The DCSF have produced a toolkit to help our partners communicate the Children's Plan. Rather than include the entire toolkit, which includes digital resources, factsheets (and a bright and colourful copy of the Children's Plan written for young people) I thought it would be simpler to offer a quick link to all of the available resources on the DCSF website below:

The Children’s Plan (2007) sets out the expectation that all schools will provide access to the core offer of extended services by 2010, including swift and easy access (SEA) to targeted and specialist services. The Every Child Matters website contains a set of useful factsheets for schools, parents and practitioners surrounding the theme of integrated services and again, rather than include all of the factsheets here, please click the link below to download those that you feel may be most appropriate:

The Starting School project is part of the wider Department for Education and Skills (DfEF) programme for developing parenting support through extended schools. These transition information sessions for parents contribute to the overall school improvement plan and Ofsted self evaluation form - it also formed part of our recent audit for extended services full core offer. FURTHER CONSULTATION & RESEARCH DOCUMENTS - Including Local Indicators
Statistics reveal that Fareham has low numbers of people from ethnic minorities and the community has been slow to adapt services to meet their needs. However, with the prospect of major development in the area over the coming years, there is a need to ensure that authorities and organisations act now to ensure their services are fully inclusive in time for the influx of new people. Download this interesting report below:

Please note that although it is marked 'restricted' it has been cleared for the partnership's use. Please take the opportunity to read the conclusion as it offers evidence to support the extended services priorities for youth provision in our area (and may be useful to support evidence of need when you write your applications for the ES funding too!)

Report to the Community Review Panel dated 14 November 2007. Research findings into activities of what young people in Fareham do in their spare time. Secondary schools and community groups may find this useful for identifying existing provision in the area and the young people who are accessing these activities. This also provides quite a useful directory of what's available to young people in the Fareham area!

From April 2008 all local authorities have a new legislative duty to secure sufficient childcare for all parents who chose to use it in their area. As part of this all local authorities have undertaken a "childcare sufficiency assessment" which maps the supply of childcare and assesses the demand. Below is the very useful childcare sufficiency report for the Borough of Fareham.

Another useful
document that relates very strongly to our partnership's vision and
action plan regarding "A Space To Enjoy Childhood" and Fareham Borough
Council's Play Strategy shown above, is the Department for Children,
Schools and Families "Fair Play" Document. This consultation sets
out Government's proposals on play, structured around the priorities
identified by research and through consultation with parents, play
experts, and children published April 2008.
